Champéry (Portes du Soleil) brings together the very best of both worlds – it’s a quaint little mountain village which provides fairly easy access to the sizable Portes du Soleil ski area. The resort rises up to heights of 2280m, is one of the major resorts in the Swiss area of the world’s largest international lift-linked ski area (the Franco-Swiss Portes du Soleil). Skiing is reached by cable car from this large village with a mostly hotel-based après-ski scene. The resort is very good for intermediate skiers seeking a quiet time in a lovely location, and offers some of the most challenging runs you are likely to come across for the expert skiers.
Access to the Portes du Soleil circuit is simple. A mere two lifts takes the skier to neigbouring resort of Avoriaz near the French border (in fact you can comfortably get from the resort to Morzine and nearby Les Gets too!). The descent back to Champéry presents the famous Swiss Wall (the greatest of all mogul fields), and some excellent off-piste opportunities.
Champéry is recommended for those who love the ambiance and more affordable prices of a dainty Swiss village but also want skiing conveniences comparable to one of the top rated resorts.
